Professionals who work with families with infants need to understand the importance of a safe sleeping environment for babies and encourage their clients to adopt safe sleeping habits.

Public policy makers need to recognize that unsafe sleep is the leading cause of death for healthy infants – accounting for as many as 64 percent of infant deaths that were not caused by prematurity or congenital abnormalities.

From 2007 to 2012, 63 Monroe County Infants died in unsafe sleeping conditions.
